Dr. Merrell is Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1999 to 2003, he was Stuart McGuire Professor and Chairman of VCU’s Department of Surgery. Dr. Merrell was also the Clinical Director of VCU Health Systems Telemedicine Program. Previously he was the Lampman Professor and Chairman of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. He also previously served as Associate Dean and Vice Dean of the Medical School at the University of Texas, Houston. In Texas, Dr. Merrell’s telemedicine efforts began when he developed a relationship with NASA to augment the relief mission in Armenia after the earthquake of 1988. Dr. Merrell has been awarded the public service medal three times by NASA and he has participated in numerous international efforts, including programs in Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Greece, Egypt, Brazil, Pakistan, Kosova, Romania and Ecuador.
